Isles of Scilly: 30th September to 21st October
Summary:
3 weeks at Peacehaven on St Marys.
Ben and Emma joined us for the first 10 days
Birds
No UK bird ticks for me. Cattle Egret for Alison. Sora & Red-eyed Vireo for Ben.
From the boat on the outward journey: Great Shearwater, British Storm-petrel, Great Skua, (Bottle-nosed?) Dolphins
113 bird species recorded on Scilly + 7 at sea from the Scillonian
27 bird year ticks for me: the 6 above + Pale-bellied Brent Goose, Black-necked Grebe, Shag, American Golden Plover, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Jack Snipe, Caspian Tern, Wryneck, Short-toed Lark, Woodlark, White Wagtail, Black Redstart, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Barred Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Little Bunting, Lapland Bunting, Snow Bunting.
Yellow-browed Warblers had arrived in abundance and were seen every day - for the first 10 days they were probably seen more often than Chiffchaffs.
Nearly all the new birds were seen in the first 10 days and only Woodlark was added in the 3rd week.
Moths
2 New moths trapped by me: Dewicks Plusia (on 7th) and Radfords Flame Shoulder (on 8th and 13th)
2 New moths trapped by others but seen and photographed by me: Porters Rustic, Golden Twin-spot
22 other year ticks including 3 Blairs Mocha, several Palpita vitrealis and a Vestal.
82 species recorded in total.
A brief spell of mass moth migration on 7th & 8th was impressive. On 7th a round of the ivy produced clouds of Rush Veneer. We recorded 1400 moths of 51 species that night, including 850 Rush Veneer.
Islands
We visited St Agnes twice, Tresco twice, Bryher once and St Martins once. We didn't do any around the islands or pelagic trips this year.
