Lizard - 20&21/09/2017
Tuesday 19th: We drove from Cumbria to Devon and stayed for a night with Harry and Lucy Studholme at Perridge House. Although I think of Harry & Lucy often, I haven't actually seen them since Ben and I stayed for a night when we were visiting Plymouth University when he (Ben) was still at school 15 years ago - so a visit was long overdue. We had a very pleasant conversation over dinner and drinks at the Nobody Inn and a very comfortable night's rest at the magnificent Perridge Estate.
Wednesday 20th: The started well with brilliant sunshine, breakfast with Harry and Lucy, and moth traps to go through. We then headed on to the Lizard and the weather gradually turned dismal and then rained all afternoon. We checked in at the Polurrian Bay Hotel and spent the afternoon reading.
Thursday 21st: Today we did a long walk on a stretch of the SW coastal path we had not previously done. We started with the intention of catching the 9.13 bus from Mullion to Ruan Minor; missed it by 2 minutes and ended up walking on very muddy and wet tracks after yesterday's heavy rain. Eventually arrived at the very scenic village of Cadgwith where we stopped for a coffee/tea. Then, 3 hours later than we had intended, we started on the coastal path - which was very scenic throughout. Stopped for lunch at Lizard Point and eventually arrived, somewhat wearily, back at the hotel at 6pm. Distance ~22km.
Friday 22nd: Set moth traps - and obtained Black-banded - one of the 6 species I had targeted for our 2 night stay. Also obtained a Hummingbird Hawkmoth and a Scarce Bordered Straw, but otherwise the catch was quite disappointing.
