Day 13: 04/06/2015 Stob Mhic Mhartuin (Glen Coe)
Set out with the intention of going to Glen Coe ski centre catching the chair lift and doing Creise (a Munro). But when we arrived the clouds were obscuring much of our route and we didn't fancy another walk in the highlands without any views. Parts of the ridge on the north side of the glen were below the cloud base and looked like they might afford us some good views and nice walking. We took the West Highland Way (shown in blue on the map below), turned left (west) at the top of the 'Devil's Staircase' (a series of switchbacks in the WHW to get you up to the pass between Glen Coe and Kinlochleven) and ascended Stob Mhic Mhartuin at 707m. We continued slightly down to a plateau before climbing the slope of the Sron a Choire Odhair-bhig ridge - which we ventured along for about 1km, reaching the cairn at 806m. This ridge has an unnamed high point at 903m (12m too low to be classified as a Munro) - since it was in cloud we opted out of this and returned to the point at which we had reached the ridge and then carried on along and down it to the north-east. Despite the cloud and persistent light rain the views from here, into Glen Coe with its massive ranges of mountains to the south, to the Mamore range around Kinlochleven to the north and to the vast Blackwater reservoir to the north-east, were all very good - the persistence of snow on the high peaks all around adding to the effect. The ridge eventually delivered us back to the West Highland Way, on which we reascended to the pass and then back down to the road.
