Day 11: Conwy Mountain
Sunday 19th July
Very heavy rain and strong winds overnight – but the moth traps were full, despite the Heath trap having blown over. 3 new species for me – Ashworths Rustic (restricted to N.Wales and one of 3 target species for Sychnant Pass), Rosy Minor and Plain Golden Y (both of which are said to be common but have evaded me so far).
Walked in the hills of Sychnant Pass this morning and visited the Pensychnant NR (www.pensychnant.co.uk) where we met Julian – who turns out to be the county moth recorder. He tells me that my Ashworth’s Rustic was the first record for the year – having failed to obtain it on a moth event he organized last weekend. Saw plenty of chough.
After a reading session in the early afternoon, which Alison continued into the late afternoon, I went for a stroll from Pen Pyra (our farmhouse) on Conwy Mountain – tremendous views of Conwy with its castle and RSPB reserve and across to Great Orme.
