Mayar (928m) & Driesh (947m) - 2 Munros from Glen Doll - 06/05/2018
Distance: 14.5km, Ascent: 835m, Time: 5h
Although it was a bit inconvenient to do these hills today instead of yesterday as it involved a 1 hour drive each way, it proved to be the right thing to do. The cloud-base was above the tops all day and there was plenty of blue sky. The walk starts from the Glen Doll car-park about 3 miles further up the valley from the Glen Clova hotel we stayed in the night before last. Initially we ascended through forestry on tracks that were a bit too good to feel like wilderness walking. Eventually this turned into a good forest path and opened out into the magnificent Corrie Fee (shown in the image above). Apparently the reason for the better than usual 'road' through the forest is that Corrie Fee is available for weddings!
Once on the plateau the rise to the summit of Mayar was straight ahead and the views over the surrounding mountains extensive. We could see 3 of the other Munros we had climbed this week (Mount Keen, Broad Cairn, and Cairn Bannoch). From Mayar we could see Driesh to the east. It took about an hour to walk from one to the other. Descent was straightforward down the Shank of Drumfellow with great views of the Corrie of Kilbo. This is the only place we saw any wildlife of interest on this route - a pair of Ring Ouzel. The lack of wildlife may be because there were far more people about today than on any of our previous walks - it being a Bank Holiday weekend and this being a relatively easy and popular walk.
