Day13-15: 23-25/02/2024 – Kitulgala
On Day 13 we did a pre-breakfast birding session along the road from the Rain Forest Edge hotel. Then after breakfast we birded the grounds of the hotel while waiting for our departure to Kitulgala. The next 6 images are from this morning. By the time we left Sinharaja we had seen ALL the Sri Lankan endemic bird species.
After arrival at Kitulgala we set off to find 3 species new for the trip: Slaty-legged Crake, Black-throated Munia and Brown-backed Needletail. Unusually for this trip we failed with all three - but we did see them all when we tried again over the next two days.
On Day 14 we birded the area around Kitulgala. The star bird of the day was the gorgeous diminutive Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, which we had glimpsed yesterday but saw very well with the sunshine showing off its bright colours today.
On Day 15 we visited a raptor view point in the Kitulgala area - and saw some raptors amongst other things.
We returned to the hotel for lunch and then set off back to the Vivanti airport hotel near Columbo airport - ready for our return to Heathrow next day.
