Day 15: Carnedd Llewellyn
Thursday 23rd July
I left early to do the long ascent of Carnedd Llewellyn. After navigating a series of narrow country lanes, which were largely without signposting, I eventually found the parking spot on the Roman Road above Rowen (SH721716) (430m). The route takes in 4 additional summits on the way to Carnedd Llewellyn each with some descent before regaining height – which of course means there was a significant amount of ascent on the return route as well. Most of the route is on a broad grassy ridge but there are rocky sections. No wildlife was seen en-route but 2 Peregrines were flying over the car-park calling at the end of the walk. The wind was strong for much of the time and it was cold (for July) – I needed 4 layers until the last 1-2km of descent. Overcast and occasionally in cloud on the ascent, becoming brighter with some prolonged sunny moments on the descent; it stayed dry. Views good of the mountains themselves but also across the whole of the north Wales coast. The summits were: Drum (760m), Foel-fras (942m), Carnedd Gwenllian (926m), Foel Grach (976m), Carnedd Llewellyn (1064m); distance ~20km; total ascent ~900m.
