Day 8: Duddon Moss and moth-trapping at St Catherine's
Thurs 16th July
Quiet morning reading - my book of the trip is Hyperion by Dan Simmons (given to me as a father's day gift by Peter).
After lunch went into Coniston and ordered a new door number in slate. Then did a short circuit drive via Broughton-in-Furness, Grizebeck and Duddon Moss. Had a short walk here and found Manchester Treble-bar which is new to me.

After dinner I went to St Catherine's in search (once again) of Netted Carpet. This is a very rare moth, found only around Windermere and Coniston - and nowhere else in the UK. Roland was there with 2 colleagues. They stayed until 23:30 without success. I got agreement to leave the traps overnight but stayed a little longer. Almost as soon as they had gone a Netted Carpet was seen to enter my Heath trap. I was then faced with the dilemma of opening the trap in the dark to make sure of the ID and obtain the specimen for photography – risking it escaping in the process – or waiting until morning, when it would most likely be docile, risking it finding its way out in the night. I opted for the former and obtained good images. Back to Scarr Head and bed at 00:30.
