Day 8: 30/05/2015 Allt Mhuic
Set off from Kingussie on the scenic drive across the highlands towards Fort William. Detoured to Glen Loy for an unsuccessful search for Chequered Skipper before going to Allt Mhuic on Loch Arkaig. Stunning scenery all around especially the views across to the snow capped Ben Nevis. Again our search for Chequered Skipper was unsuccessful - but there was, completely coincidentally, a butterfly conservation event going on and Tom - the organiser had a specimen in a pot that was obligingly static on its release for several seconds while it warmed up - sufficient to obtain a reasonable picture anyway. This is one of our rarest resident butterflies, confines to an area of the west highlands ~40km from Fort William. Also caught several 'micros' at this reserve hopefully including Udea decrepitalis (new for me and to be confirmed). Did our shopping in the Morrisons at Fort William (as usual) and on to our self-catering accommodation 'Roe Deer Cottage' in North Ballachulish - very nice. Having not set my traps for the last two nights due to unseasonal cold, I hope for some trapping success tonight.
