"Ecuador" is Spanish for "equator", its name reflecting its position with the equator running just north of the capital city Quito. It is bordered by Columbia to the north, Peru to the east and south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It's population is 15.3 million with 2 million living in Guayaquil and 1.3 million in Quito, these being by far the largest cities. Ecuador includes the Galapagos Islands which are 1000km west of the mainland coast.
Politically Ecuador is divided into 24 provinces.
Geographically Ecuador is divided into 4 regions. 1. The coastal lowlands (La Costa) - fertile and productive with banana and rice crops and fisheries 2. The Andes mountains, volcanoes and foothills (La Sierra) 3. The Amazon rainforest (El Oriente) - mostly national park and land reserved for native tribes but parts are extensively exploited for oil 4. The Galapagos Islands Interesting Fact: Mt Chimborazao at 6268m (yes, I know it says 6310m on the map) is the highest in Ecuador - it is also the point on the Earth's surface that is furthest from the centre of the Earth (because the Earth is ellipsoid rather than spherical) |
Ecuador has the most biodiversity per square km of any nation .....
