Day 3: 20/06/2015 - A coastal walk around Portland
Bumper catch in the moth trap this morning - took 4 hours to process. Highlights were 5 more Bordered Straws, a Small Mottled Willow and a probable Pelochrista caecimaculata, which, if confirmed, is new for me.
After breakfast we went for a walk around the southern 2/3 of the Isle of Portland. This was about 13km and with exploring old quarries and stopping for lunch it took about 6 hours. Magnificent coastal scenery all the way (if you ignore the bit where we skirted the young offenders prison) and plenty of wild flowers. On one occasion we were watching a Peregrine chasing a pigeon, the Peregrine stooped and both birds disappeared below the cliff-tops. We were standing near the cliff edge wondering whether the pigeon had been taken, when it suddenly reappeared over the cliff edge immediately in front of us and flew about a metre over our heads hotly pursued by the Peregrine. An exciting moment!
