Beinn na Lap (935m) - 06/04/2022
Distance: 14km; Ascent: 562m; Time: 4h
We took the train from Rannoch to Corrour. The train was delayed by an hour due to adverse weather conditions. This proved to be no bad thing as It rained quite heavily for most of that hour and we were able to keep warm and dry in the Rannoch Station visitor centre - where there is a nice tearoom and a display about Rannoch Moor and the construction of the railway across it.
Our route is shown above. It deviates from the Walk Highlands recommended route by following the track skirting the hill about 1km further west and so adding ~4km to the distance. We did this because the ground was extremely boggy on the recommended route, after the recent heavy rain, and the slope marginally less steep. Although there were intermittent hints at a track, the route we took was largely pathless. By the time we started walking the rain had eased and - although there was a constant spit in the air, which turned to sleet and snow higher up, and the summit remained in the clouds all day, there were occasional sunny spells - we had a quite pleasant day out in the hills. We had considered continuing NNE along the ridge to return via Strath Ossian and the north shore of Loch Ossian - but this would have added 15km to the walk and in the poor visibility at the summit the direction of the onward route was not clear.

We stopped for lunch during a sunny spell on the descent and were treated to a Golden Eagle soaring overhead.
We returned to Corrour Station 3 hours early for our train. Had some refreshments including a perfect flat white, played Scrabble and then had dinner - all very pleasant and relaxed. |
