Day 21 - Wednesday 23/09/2105: Cap Masoala
After an early breakfast we (Alison, Margaret and I with Brian, Claude and Ursula as guides, Sam and Phil having decided to have a lie in) set off into the forest inland of our beach. We had two main targets – Helmet Vanga, which we found and saw well, and Bernier’s Vanga which we heard but only Brian saw. This was pretty much all we had to show for a fairly arduous 5 hours walk.
After lunch we (Sam, Phil, Margaret and I with the same guides, Alison having decided to have a siesta) took a boat ride to a nearby resort. On the way we looked at some terns on rocks but found nothing new. The forest we walked in this afternoon had more trees with large buttresses than we have encountered elsewhere in Madagascar. We found 2 or 3 more Helmet Vangas, heard but did not see Red-ruffed Lemur and saw a couple of interesting lizards.
Alison and I had a final walk along the beach and then prepared our packs for an early departure tomorrow.
