Corvara 07-10/03/2020
Flew Gatwick to Venice and then a 3.5hr transfer to Corvara. Having never been to Venice before, It was interesting to see (from the air) how low-laying and surrounded by water the city is - it won't take much of a sea level rise for the place to be inundated. However, Innsbruck is much closer and would have made a more sensible place to land for the transfer to Corvara. Corvara is a ski resort in Alta Badia, South Tyrol, Italy. I came here for a week of off-piste skiing with Snoworks. We (the Snoworks group) stayed at Hotel La Plaza. This was a short walk to the ski lifts, provided excellent evening meals and adequate breakfasts. It didn't provide any apres-ski refreshments and there was no facility for tea/coffee making away from meal-times.
On Sunday 8th 7 of us did the Sellaronda ski circuit in excellent conditions. On Monday 9th we had a day with the Snoworks team - improving our on-piste skiing technique and doing the obligatory avalanche training. On Monday night we were informed that BA had cancelled our return flight from Venice and that the resort was to close due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We all made plans to return home ASAP. Early Tuesday morning we had a coach to Innsbruck, then 5 of us took the train to Munich and flew back to Gatwick from there. A lot of effort for 2 days skiing - but I would certainly like to ski in the Dolomites again.
