Jura - 15/04/2022
Jura is an island of the inner Hebrides immediately north and east of Islay. It has a population of just 200 people (compared with ~3200 for Islay). It is accessed via a regular ro-ro ferry from Port Askaig on Islay. There is a single "main" road along the south and south east of the island. The west coast is largely inaccessible due to mountains and bog. Jura is almost completely divided into north and south by Loch Tarbert.
The south of the island is dominated by 3 large conical mountains - the Paps of Jura. We had intended to climb the highest of these, Beinn an Oir, and set off to do so in the hope that the cloud would lift off the top by the time we got there. In the end we walked as far as the Loch an t-Siob, where we admired the view, but turned around as the cloud was descending rather lifting. At 785m Beinn an Oir is a Corbett |
The highlight of the day for me was the best view of an otter I have ever had - in the harbour at Post Askaig while waiting for the ferry.
