Revelstoke to Golden
The drive from Revelstoke was again very scenic, but hampered by compacted snow and slush on the roads and trucks stopping in the traffic lanes to put their snow chains on. En route we passed the Mount Robson pass and the place where we had started our ascent to the Asulkan hut 10 years ago.

Golden
Saturday 11th March. We had a quiet day wandering around Golden. I managed to add Eurasian Starling and Great Blue Heron to the trip bird list and took some photos of Bohemian Waxwings from a flock of ~1000 near Steve's house. Golden sits at the confluence of the Kicking Horse and Columbia rivers. |
Finally - thanks to Steve, John and Ian for your company and making this such a pleasant adventure.
May be we'll do it again in another 10 years - when we'll all get free lift passes!

Some interesting things I learnt while here:
Canada has 13 States/Territories - see map below.
Canada has 5 time zones - (GMT -3.5 to -8)
Tree wells are a skiing hazard I had not previously encountered - snow doesn't reach the area around the trunk and the fall-off from the tree itself can raise the snow depth around the tree - so the area around the trunk may be surrounded by a 3m wall of snow - that can be very difficult to get out of it you fall into it - especially if you do so head first with your skis trapped.
Snow ghosts are trees that are completely covered in snow.
