Day 1 - 9th July: Drive to Brundall and moth-trapping at Winterton
Day 2 - 10th July: Brundall and moth-trapping at Strumpshaw Fen
Day 3 - 11th July: Drive to Scarr Head, Torver (near Coniston)
Thur 9th July
Set off after lunch for Brundall.
After dinner Ben and I went to Winterton for a moth-trapping night.
Fri 10th July
Having slept (on and off) in the car, we woke early to go through the traps at Winterton.
Returned to Brundall for a photography session which lasted the rest of the morning. Some nice moths with one species (Crambus uliginosellus) new to me.
After lunch Alison took care of Toby and I went to Ormsby Little Broad to see a Lesser Emperor dragonfly, which I had never seen before. These are readily identifiable to the naked eye by their size and bright blue saddle – which is fortunate as the one (or two) here whizzed past too quickly to get bins onto them, let alone a camera. Here is a more obliging Norfolk Hawker:

Sat 11th July
The day started at 05:00 with a mammoth 4½ hour session going through the moth traps at Strumpshaw Fen with Ben. This produced 5 species new for me: Gelechia muscosella, Phalonidia udana, Apotomis capreana, Lesser Wax moth and Gothic.
We left Brundall for the drive to Cumbria at about 10.00, arriving at Scarr Head, near Coniston, at 16:00.
Interestingly, despite being further north, it takes longer to drive to Cumbria from Brundall than it does from Southend.
After unpacking I had a mammoth 4 hour photography session of this morning’s moths.
