Fernie to Nelson
Friday 3rd March - The journey got off to a delayed start when we realised that the trailer which was carrying all our luggage had a flat tyre (or tire as they spell it here). En route we saw White-tailed Deer, Big-horn Sheep and a I got a brief glimpse of an American Dipper.

Nelson
Saturday 4th to Tuesday 7th March. Ian and I stayed at the Best Western in downtown Nelson. Steve and John stayed in an Air B&B (more accurately and Air B, since there was no breakfast included) just outside of town. Ian left on Sunday 5th to do some business in Calgary as planned.
Nelson is situated on a west arm of the very large Lake Kootenay. I had short walks along the shore of the lake after skiing on 4th and 5th and a much longer walk (6 hours) on 7th when I had a day off skiing. On this occasion I walked all along the Nelson waterfront and back along a track through the forest along the course of a disused railway line. I found Western Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe, Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Mallard, American Wigeon, Hooded Merganser, Goosander, Bufflehead, Barrow's Goldeneye, Common Goldeneye, American Coot, Northern Goshawk, Great Grey Shrike, Red-winged Blackbird, Savannah Sparrow, Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus), American Red Squirrel and Northern River Otter.
