Scilly 26/09-17/10/2020
Week 2
St Marys all week except Thursday 08/10 > Tresco
Weather: 40-50mph winds, mainly from the west, Saturday to Wednesday, sometimes with heavy rain but mostly with sunny intervals; mostly fine Thur & Fri
Birds: Black and White Warbler the undoubted highlight - UK tick for Alison and her "most wanted"; with the added bonus that we chose Thursday to go to Tresco and that was where it was found, so we were on-site and had seen the bird before the hordes arrived. The only other occasion on which I have seen this species in Britain was on St Marys in 1996. Other than that it was fairly quiet: American Golden Plover (on Tresco), Pectoral Sandpiper, Barred Warbler and Nightingale - which was a Scilly tick
Moths: nothing new and nothing rare in distinctly poor conditions for mothing.

Some scenes from sunny(ish) intervals early in the week
Social distancing goes out the window when there's a B&W Warbler around!

The Black & White Warbler (a trans-Atlantic vagrant from North America) kept well back in the sallows around the great pool on Tresco, making it difficult to get a decent photograph. It was only seen on the afternoon it was found - the 200 or so birders that came over on the boat the next day all dipped.
