Mount Mahawu
After lunch at Tangkoko lodge on 4th November we drove on to our final lodging at Villa Emitta in Tomohon. This was a very comfortable hotel where we stayed 2 nights. The afternoon's birding was serially downgraded from a visit to the mountain, to a visit to local paddy fields and ended up as a wasted session trying to find birds from the lodge car park
On 5th November we visited Mount Mahawu in the morning. Here our main targets were Scaly-breasted Kingfisher, which we eventually all got to see and Sulawesi Pitta, which put on a star performance right in front of the hide. I noticed that there were signs to view the crater and opted to go and have a look rather than return to roadside birding, John also liked this idea and came along. There was a nice path all around the rim of this vast crater – we just did a quarter of it as this nicely connected the two paths from the parking area. We returned to the lodge for lunch and later set out for a final birding session by a busy road overlooking grassy wetlands. |
5th November: 37 species seen; 3 new for me
On 6th November I spent a couple of hours early morning wandering around the quieter roads around the forested farmland near the hotel. I didn’t find any new birds but it was a nice enough thing to do. Then we set off for Manado airport and home via Singapore.
